About betamethasone
What it treats
Betamethasone is a strong corticosteroid. The cream treats eczema, dermatitis and other inflamed skin conditions, the injection is used for severe allergic reactions and inflammation, and in some pregnancies it is given before preterm birth to speed up the baby's lung development.
Why it is widely stocked
It is potent at small doses, comes in several forms, and has a recognised place in maternity services, so pharmacies, clinics and hospitals all buy it.
How it is taken
The cream is applied thinly once or twice a day for a limited time, not on the face or on broken skin unless advised, because strong steroids can thin the skin. Steroids used for long or at high doses can raise blood sugar and blood pressure, weaken bones, increase the risk of infection and cause weight gain, and they must not be stopped suddenly after long use. They are taken with food, in the morning for once-daily doses. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
