About dexamethasone
What it treats
Dexamethasone reduces inflammation and calms the immune system. Doctors use it for severe allergic reactions, asthma and other breathing problems, swelling of the brain, some inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, and to prevent nausea during chemotherapy. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why hospitals stock it
Dexamethasone is strong and acts quickly, which is why injectable dexamethasone is kept in emergency kits and ward stores. It is also recommended for patients with severe COVID-19 who need oxygen, which increased demand for it worldwide.
How it is taken
Short courses are usually well tolerated, but long courses can raise blood sugar, weaken bones, lower resistance to infection and affect mood, so the prescriber uses the lowest dose for the shortest time. After a long course, it must not be stopped suddenly. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
