About salbutamol
What it treats
Salbutamol, also called albuterol, relaxes the muscles around the airways, easing wheezing, cough and breathlessness in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is widely stocked
It is the first-choice reliever medicine for asthma, and it is stocked in every pharmacy, clinic and emergency department. Tablets and syrup serve places where inhalers are scarce, and respules are used in nebulisers for severe attacks.
How it is taken
Tablets and syrup are taken three or four times a day, and respules are given through a nebuliser as directed. It can cause a fast heartbeat, shaking and headache, and it needs care in people with heart disease or an overactive thyroid. It treats symptoms, so frequent use means the asthma needs a preventer medicine and a review. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
