About cough syrups

What they treat

Expectorant syrups loosen and thin mucus so a chesty cough is easier to clear, and suppressant syrups calm a dry, irritating cough. Many combine an expectorant with a bronchodilator or a decongestant.

Why they sell

Coughs and colds are the most common reason to visit a pharmacy, and cough syrups are one of the largest private label categories, with room for flavours, bottle shapes and brand names.

How they are taken

Syrups are taken three or four times a day, measured with the cup or spoon supplied. Regulators in many countries restrict cough and cold medicines for young children, and some ingredients are not allowed in them, so the label's age limits apply. Syrups containing opioids or sedating antihistamines are not part of our range. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
