About levocetirizine
What it treats
Levocetirizine is an antihistamine used to relieve the symptoms of hay fever and year-round allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes, and to treat hives (urticaria) and itching.
Why it is chosen
It is the active half of cetirizine, so a lower dose works, it acts within an hour, and a single daily tablet gives relief for 24 hours. It is a best-seller in pharmacies, and the syrup serves children.
How it is taken
One 5 mg tablet is taken once a day, in the evening for many people, and children take a dose by age and weight. It can cause drowsiness in some people, so they are advised to take care when driving, and the dose is lowered in kidney disease. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
