About loratadine
What it treats
Loratadine is an antihistamine that relieves sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes and itchy skin caused by hay fever, other allergies and hives. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is widely sold
Loratadine causes little drowsiness, is taken once a day, and is sold without a prescription in many countries, which makes it a staple for pharmacies and private label products.
How it is taken
One 10 mg tablet is taken once a day, and the syrup is dosed by age and weight for children. The dose is lowered in people with severe liver disease. It rarely causes headache or dry mouth. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
