About hydrocortisone
What it treats
Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid identical to the body's own cortisol. Tablets replace it in adrenal insufficiency and congenital adrenal hyperplasia, the injection is used in emergencies such as adrenal crisis and severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), and the mild cream relieves eczema, insect bites and itching. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is widely stocked
The injection is a standard emergency medicine in every hospital and clinic, and the cream is a staple of pharmacies, so it is bought across the full range of channels.
How it is taken
Tablets are taken in divided doses through the day, and the cream is applied sparingly once or twice a day for a short time. People who rely on hydrocortisone replacement must never miss doses. Steroids used for long or at high doses can raise blood sugar and blood pressure, weaken bones, increase the risk of infection and cause weight gain, and they must not be stopped suddenly after long use. They are taken with food, in the morning for once-daily doses. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
