About prednisolone
What it treats
Prednisolone is a corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and suppress the immune system in asthma, severe allergy, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, kidney conditions, some blood disorders and many other illnesses. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is widely stocked
It is cheap, works quickly and has a very wide range of uses, so it is one of the most used steroids in hospitals and clinics, and in paediatric services in its dispersible form.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day in the morning with food, with the dose and length set by the condition. Steroids used for long or at high doses can raise blood sugar and blood pressure, weaken bones, increase the risk of infection and cause weight gain, and they must not be stopped suddenly after long use. They are taken with food, in the morning for once-daily doses. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
