About omeprazole
What it treats
Omeprazole reduces the amount of acid the stomach makes. It is used to treat acid reflux and heartburn (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), stomach and duodenal ulcers, and in combination with antibiotics to clear the Helicobacter pylori bacteria that cause many ulcers. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why the capsule is delayed-release
Stomach acid destroys omeprazole, so the medicine is packed as small coated pellets that pass through the stomach intact and release in the intestine. The coating has to be applied and tested carefully, which is why omeprazole capsules are a good example of quality in manufacturing. We also supply the coated pellets to companies that make their own capsules.
How it is taken
It is usually taken once a day, about thirty minutes before a meal, and the capsule is swallowed whole. The dose and the length of treatment are set by the prescriber. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
