About pantoprazole
What it treats
Pantoprazole reduces the amount of acid the stomach makes. It is used to treat acid reflux and heartburn, stomach and duodenal ulcers, and ulcers caused by anti-inflammatory painkillers, and to protect the stomach in people who take those painkillers for a long time. It is also used with antibiotics to clear the bacteria that cause many ulcers.
Tablet and injection
The tablets are coated to pass through the stomach acid and release in the intestine, so they must be swallowed whole. The injection is given into a vein in hospital, for example for bleeding ulcers or when a patient cannot swallow. Both forms are made to the same specification and tested batch by batch.
How it is taken
The tablet is taken once a day, usually about thirty minutes before breakfast, and is swallowed whole. The dose and the length of treatment are set by the prescriber. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
