About pyrazinamide
What it treats
Pyrazinamide is an antibiotic used with other medicines to treat tuberculosis (TB). It is taken in the first two months of the standard regimen, called the intensive phase, alongside rifampicin, isoniazid and ethambutol, and it is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it shortens treatment
Pyrazinamide works well on bacteria that live in the acidic, inflamed parts of the lung, where other medicines are less effective. Adding it to the regimen is what makes a six-month course possible, which helps patients finish treatment. National programmes buy it as a single drug and inside fixed-dose combinations.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day, with the dose set by body weight. It can affect the liver and raise uric acid, which can cause joint pain, so patients are told to report symptoms such as yellow eyes, dark urine or painful joints. Tuberculosis treatment lasts at least six months and must be completed under a clinician or programme, so patients should always follow the approved label and the national guidelines in their country.
