About ethambutol
What it treats
Ethambutol is an antibiotic used with other medicines to treat tuberculosis (TB). It is taken in the first two months of the standard regimen alongside rifampicin, isoniazid and pyrazinamide, and is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is part of the regimen
Ethambutol slows the growth of the bacteria and helps stop them becoming resistant to the other medicines while treatment is under way. National programmes buy it as a single drug and inside four-drug fixed-dose combinations.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day, with the dose set by body weight. It can affect eyesight, particularly at higher doses or in people with kidney problems, so patients are told to report any change in vision, such as blurred sight or difficulty telling colours apart, straight away. Tuberculosis treatment lasts at least six months and must be completed under a clinician or programme, so patients should always follow the approved label and the national guidelines in their country.
