About rifampicin
What it treats
Rifampicin is a rifamycin antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis (TB), a bacterial infection that usually affects the lungs. It is a first-line medicine in the standard regimen and is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines. It is also used in treating leprosy, always together with other medicines.
Why it is used with other medicines
Tuberculosis is treated with several medicines at once, because a single medicine lets resistant bacteria survive. Rifampicin is taken with isoniazid, pyrazinamide and ethambutol at the start of treatment, and with isoniazid for the remaining months. Programmes buy it as a single drug and inside fixed-dose combinations.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day, usually on an empty stomach, with the dose set by body weight. It can turn urine, sweat and tears orange-red, which is harmless, and it affects how the liver processes many other medicines, including some HIV treatments and hormonal contraceptives. Tuberculosis treatment lasts at least six months and must be completed under a clinician or programme, so patients should always follow the approved label and the national guidelines in their country.
