About isoniazid
What it treats
Isoniazid is an antibiotic used to treat tuberculosis (TB) and, on its own, to prevent TB in people at high risk of developing it, such as close contacts and people living with HIV. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why programmes buy it
Isoniazid acts quickly against the TB bacteria, is stable and inexpensive, and is part of both the intensive and the continuation phases of treatment. National programmes buy it as a single drug, inside fixed-dose combinations and for preventive therapy.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day, with the dose set by body weight, and is often given with vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) to protect the nerves. It can affect the liver, so patients are told to report symptoms such as yellow eyes, dark urine or persistent nausea. Tuberculosis treatment lasts at least six months and must be completed under a clinician or programme, so patients should always follow the approved label and the national guidelines in their country.
