About gabapentin
What it treats
Gabapentin is used with other medicines to control some kinds of epileptic seizures, and to treat nerve (neuropathic) pain, such as the burning pain that can follow shingles and the pain of diabetic neuropathy. It does not work as an ordinary painkiller for aches or injuries.
How it works
Gabapentin calms overactive nerve signals in the brain and spinal cord, which reduces seizures and nerve pain. It is not changed by the body and leaves through the kidneys, so the dose is lowered for people with kidney problems.
How it is taken
Treatment starts with a low dose that is raised slowly, and it is usually taken two or three times a day. It can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so patients should take care when driving. It should not be stopped suddenly, and because it can be misused, it is a controlled medicine in some countries. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
