About levetiracetam
What it treats
Levetiracetam prevents seizures in epilepsy, as a single medicine or together with others, covering focal, myoclonic and generalised seizures.
Why it is chosen
It is easy to use: two doses a day, few interactions with other medicines, and no routine blood tests. It is increasingly bought by hospitals and pharmacies as patents expire, and an oral solution and injection exist for patients who cannot swallow.
How it is taken
It is taken twice a day, with the dose raised slowly, and the dose is lowered in kidney disease. It must not be stopped suddenly, because that can bring on seizures or withdrawal effects. Common effects are drowsiness and tiredness, and it can change mood and behaviour in some people, particularly children, so they are watched for irritability or low mood. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
