About sodium valproate

What it treats

Sodium valproate prevents seizures in epilepsy, including generalised, absence and myoclonic seizures, and is used in the treatment of bipolar disorder and, in some cases, migraine prevention. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.

Why it is widely used

It controls the widest range of seizure types of any single medicine, so it is a first choice for generalised epilepsy, and it comes in a syrup for children.

How it is taken

It is taken once or twice a day, and it must not be stopped suddenly, because that can bring on seizures or withdrawal effects. Valproate can seriously harm an unborn baby, so it is not for women who could become pregnant unless there is no alternative and a pregnancy prevention programme is followed, as the regulator in each country sets out. It can affect the liver and pancreas, and liver tests are done. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.

Questions about sodium valproate

Something else? Email [email protected].

Which strengths of sodium valproate do you supply?

Tablets of 200 mg and 500 mg; syrups of 200 mg per 5 ml. Other strengths can be made to order, and pack sizes and labelling are made to match the registration in your country.

Is sodium valproate a prescription medicine?

In most countries, yes. It is sold with a prescription and registered with the national medicines regulator. Rules differ by country, so check with your authority.

Why is valproate restricted for women of child-bearing age?

Valproate can cause birth defects and developmental problems in children exposed in the womb, so regulators require warnings, a pregnancy prevention programme and written consent. The label we prepare follows your regulator's wording.

Can you supply it under our own brand?

Yes. Progene Pharma manufactures it as a private label product, with the carton, blister foil or label and patient leaflet designed for your market and your regulator's requirements.

Which documents come with it?

Every batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Progene Pharma also provides the Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP), MSDS and the product dossier you need to register and import it.

Where is it manufactured?

Progene Pharma manufactures it in a WHO-GMP certified facility in India, also certified to EU-GMP and ISO standards. Tell us your destination country and we will confirm which certification applies to your order.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

Both depend on the strength, pack size and documents your market needs. We confirm them with your quotation, and we work with large importers as well as smaller distributors.
