About fluoxetine
What it treats
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia and panic and anxiety disorders. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is widely used
It is taken once a day, has a long half-life that softens the effect of a missed dose, and is better tolerated than older antidepressants, so it is a first choice in many guidelines.
How it is taken
It is usually taken once a day in the morning, and benefit builds over several weeks. In young people and early in treatment, mood and suicidal thoughts need watching, and it is not stopped suddenly. It can interact with other medicines that affect serotonin and with some painkillers. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
