About glibenclamide

What it treats

Glibenclamide, also called glyburide, is a sulfonylurea used to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when diet and exercise are not enough. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.

Why it is still used

It is among the cheapest diabetes medicines, has decades of use behind it, and is stocked by public health systems in many countries. Because its effect lasts long, newer guidelines prefer other medicines for older patients, but demand from programmes and pharmacies remains high.

How it is taken

It is taken once or twice a day with meals, at a dose the prescriber adjusts. It can cause low blood sugar, which is more of a risk in older people and in people with kidney problems, and it is not suitable in pregnancy. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
