About metformin hydrochloride
What it treats
Metformin is used to treat type 2 diabetes, the most common form, alongside diet and exercise. It is the first medicine most guidelines recommend, and it is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines. It is also used in some countries for other conditions, which are decided by the prescriber.
How it works
Metformin lowers the amount of sugar the liver releases into the blood and helps the body respond better to its own insulin. Unlike some other diabetes tablets, it does not usually cause blood sugar to fall too low when taken alone, and it is inexpensive, which is why it is bought in large quantities by programmes and tenders.
How it is taken
It is taken with or after meals to reduce stomach upset, once, twice or three times a day depending on the tablet, and the extended-release tablets are taken once a day. It is not suitable for people with severe kidney problems. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.

Questions about metformin
Something else? Email [email protected].
Which strengths of metformin do you supply?
Tablets of 500 mg, 850 mg and 1000 mg, and extended-release tablets of 500 mg, 750 mg and 1000 mg. Pack sizes and labelling are made to match the registration in your country.
Do you make metformin combinations?
Yes. We make metformin with glimepiride, gliclazide, sitagliptin and vildagliptin in one tablet, and can make other combinations to the strengths your guidelines recommend.
Can you supply it under our own brand?
Yes. Progene Pharma manufactures it as a private label product, with the carton, blister foil and patient leaflet designed for your market and your regulator's requirements.
What is the difference between metformin and extended-release metformin?
Standard tablets release the medicine quickly and are taken two or three times a day. Extended-release tablets release it slowly over many hours and are taken once a day, which helps patients keep to treatment and can cause less stomach upset.
Which documents come with it?
Every batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Progene Pharma also provides the Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP), MSDS and the product dossier you need to register and import it.
Where is it manufactured?
Progene Pharma manufactures it in a WHO-GMP certified facility in India, also certified to EU-GMP and ISO standards. Tell us your destination country and we will confirm which certification applies to your order.
What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?
Both depend on the strength, pack size and documents your market needs. We confirm them with your quotation, and we work with large importers as well as smaller distributors.
