About gliclazide
What it treats
Gliclazide is a sulfonylurea used to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when diet and exercise are not enough. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines and is not used for type 1 diabetes.
Why it is chosen
Gliclazide is widely prescribed because it is effective and inexpensive, and the modified-release form gives steady control from one daily dose, which helps patients keep to treatment. It is also made as a combination with metformin.
How it is taken
The standard tablet is taken with meals, one or two times a day, and the modified-release tablet once a day with breakfast, at a dose the prescriber adjusts. Like other sulfonylureas it can cause low blood sugar if a meal is missed. It is not suitable in pregnancy or for people with severe kidney or liver disease. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
