About albendazole
What it treats
Albendazole treats infections caused by intestinal worms, such as roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and threadworm, and, at higher doses and for longer, some tissue infections such as hydatid disease and neurocysticercosis. It is also used with other medicines in programmes against lymphatic filariasis. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why programmes buy it
A single 400 mg dose clears the common worms, which is why albendazole is the backbone of school and community deworming programmes. Worm infections affect children's growth, school attendance and anaemia, and a cheap, safe, once-a-year dose is one of the most cost-effective public health measures.
How it is taken
The dose depends on the infection and on the patient's age, and a single dose is common for intestinal worms. Chewable tablets and the suspension make dosing children easier. It is taken with food when treating infections outside the gut. It is not recommended in the first three months of pregnancy. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
