About metronidazole
What it treats
Metronidazole treats infections caused by anaerobic bacteria, which grow without oxygen, such as infections in the abdomen, the mouth and gums, and the pelvis, and infections caused by parasites such as amoebiasis, giardiasis and trichomoniasis. It is also used with other medicines to clear the bacteria that cause stomach ulcers. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is so widely used
Metronidazole works against both bacteria and parasites, is well absorbed by mouth, and is inexpensive, so it is among the most commonly stocked medicines in pharmacies and hospitals. The infusion is used in hospitals when patients cannot take tablets, for example after abdominal surgery.
How it is taken
The dose and the length of the course depend on the infection and on the patient's age and weight, and the course should be completed. Alcohol must be avoided during treatment and for at least two days afterwards, because it can cause severe nausea and flushing. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
