About mebendazole

What it treats

Mebendazole treats infections with intestinal worms, including roundworm, whipworm, hookworm and threadworm. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines and is one of the two medicines, with albendazole, used in school deworming programmes.

Why programmes buy it

It is effective, safe and cheap, and a single 500 mg dose is often enough, which makes it practical for mass treatment of school children. Pharmacies also sell it for family use.

How it is taken

A single 500 mg dose or a 100 mg tablet twice a day for three days is typical, depending on the worm, and the tablet can be chewed. It is not recommended in the first three months of pregnancy or for babies under one year. Patients should follow the approved label. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.

Can mebendazole be sold without a prescription?

That depends on the country and the pack. In many places it is sold over the counter, in others only on prescription, and it is registered with the national medicines regulator either way. Check with your authority.
