About praziquantel
What it treats
Praziquantel treats schistosomiasis (bilharzia), a parasitic disease caught from fresh water that affects millions of people, mainly children in Africa. It also treats some liver and intestinal fluke infections. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why programmes buy it
One round of treatment, given to whole communities or schools, reduces illness and stops the parasite spreading, so national programmes and donors buy praziquantel in very large quantities. Scored 600 mg tablets make weight-based dosing practical.
How it is taken
It is given as a single dose, or as two or three doses on one day, set by body weight, and taken with food and water. It can cause dizziness, stomach pain and drowsiness, so patients are advised not to drive afterwards. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
