About ivermectin

What it treats

Ivermectin is used to treat river blindness (onchocerciasis), strongyloidiasis, and, with other medicines, lymphatic filariasis. It also treats scabies and head lice. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines and is given in mass treatment campaigns in many countries.

Why programmes buy it

A single dose, set by body weight, is often enough, and it is safe enough to give to whole communities, so national programmes buy it in very large quantities. Tablets in 3 mg, 6 mg and 12 mg strengths make weight-based dosing practical.

How it is taken

It is taken as a single dose with water, usually on an empty stomach, and the number of tablets is set by weight. In areas where Loa loa infection is common, it needs special care because of the risk of severe reactions. It is not recommended for young children under 15 kg or in pregnancy unless the guidelines direct it. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
