About clotrimazole
What it treats
Clotrimazole is an azole antifungal used on the skin to treat athlete's foot, ringworm and other fungal skin infections, as a vaginal pessary or cream for thrush (candidiasis), and as ear drops for fungal infections of the outer ear. It does not work on bacteria or viruses.
Why it is widely sold
Clotrimazole is effective, inexpensive and well tolerated, and in many countries it is sold without a prescription, so it is a staple of pharmacies and clinics. It is a common choice for private label creams.
How it is used
The cream is applied to the affected skin two or three times a day, and the course is continued for the time the label gives even after symptoms clear. Pessaries are inserted at night, and ear drops are used as directed. It can cause mild burning or irritation, and it should not be used with some latex products. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
