About lamivudine
What it treats
Lamivudine is a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, a type of antiretroviral. It is used together with other antiretrovirals to treat HIV infection, and in a lower dose to treat chronic hepatitis B. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why programmes buy it
Lamivudine is part of most antiretroviral regimens, including the combinations national HIV programmes buy at very large scale, and it is well tolerated and inexpensive. It is also made in fixed-dose combinations with other medicines.
How it is taken
It is taken once or twice a day, at the dose the programme's guidelines give, always together with other antiretrovirals for HIV. Patients with hepatitis B must not stop it suddenly, because the infection can flare, and the dose is lowered in kidney disease. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
