About aciclovir

What it treats

Aciclovir is an antiviral medicine used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses: cold sores, genital herpes, chickenpox and shingles. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines. It does not cure the infection, but it shortens an attack and eases symptoms when started early.

Why it is widely used

Aciclovir was the first widely available antiviral for herpes, and it remains the standard because it is effective, safe and inexpensive. Pharmacies stock the cream and tablets, and hospitals use them for shingles and for patients with weak immune systems.

How it is taken

Tablets are taken up to five times a day for a week or so, depending on the infection, and the cream is applied to cold sores several times a day. Patients are advised to drink plenty of fluids because the medicine passes through the kidneys, and the dose is lowered in kidney disease. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
