About terbinafine
What it treats
Terbinafine is an antifungal used to treat fungal infections of the skin, scalp hair and nails, such as ringworm, athlete's foot and fungal nail infections. The tablets treat infections the cream cannot reach, such as the nail bed. It does not work on bacteria or viruses.
Why it is chosen
Terbinafine kills the fungus instead of only slowing it, so courses are short, from a week or two for skin to several weeks or months for nails. This makes it a first choice for many doctors and a steady seller for pharmacies.
How it is taken
The tablet is taken once a day with or without food, for the length of time the infection needs. It can cause taste changes and, rarely, liver problems, so patients are told to report yellow eyes, dark urine or persistent nausea. It is not suitable for people with active liver disease. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
