About lamivudine and zidovudine
What it treats
Lamivudine and zidovudine is a fixed-dose combination of two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It is used together with a third antiretroviral to treat HIV infection, and in some programmes in the prevention of mother-to-child transmission.
Why a fixed-dose tablet
One tablet instead of two means fewer pills, which helps people keep to lifelong treatment, and a single pack simplifies buying and storage for national programmes. It remains in some regimens, though many countries now favour newer combinations.
How it is taken
It is taken twice a day, always with a third antiretroviral. The cautions of both medicines apply, including anaemia and low white blood cell counts from zidovudine, and the need to take care when stopping lamivudine in people with hepatitis B. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
