About atenolol

What it treats

Atenolol is a beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure, angina (chest pain from the heart), some irregular heart rhythms, and to protect the heart after a heart attack. It slows the heart and reduces the force of each beat.

Why it is widely stocked

Atenolol is cheap, taken once a day, and has been used for decades, so national medical stores and pharmacies buy it in large volumes. It is also made in combination with amlodipine.

How it is taken

It is taken once a day. It must not be stopped suddenly, because that can worsen angina or blood pressure, and it is not suitable for people with asthma, a very slow heart rate or certain heart conduction problems. It can mask the signs of low blood sugar in people with diabetes. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
