About amlodipine
What it treats
Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina, the chest pain that comes from reduced blood flow to the heart. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney problems. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
How it works
Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. It relaxes the muscles in the walls of blood vessels, so they widen and blood flows more easily, which lowers blood pressure. It works for a full day, so it is taken once daily, and it is often combined with other blood pressure medicines in one tablet.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day, with or without food, and is usually taken for years. Some people notice ankle swelling or flushing. The dose is set by the prescriber, and treatment should not be stopped without medical advice. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
