About losartan
What it treats
Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease, to treat some forms of heart failure, and to lower the risk of stroke in people with an enlarged heart. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
How it works
Losartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker. It stops a hormone called angiotensin II from tightening the blood vessels, so they stay relaxed and blood pressure falls. It is often combined with a diuretic or with amlodipine in one tablet for patients who need more than one medicine.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day, with or without food, and is usually taken for years. It must not be taken in pregnancy, and it can raise the potassium level in the blood, so the prescriber may check kidney function. The dose is set by the prescriber, and treatment should not be stopped without medical advice. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
