About atorvastatin
What it treats
Atorvastatin lowers the level of LDL cholesterol, the harmful kind, in the blood, and is used to prevent heart attacks and strokes in people at risk, including people with diabetes, high blood pressure or existing heart disease. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
How it works
Atorvastatin is a statin. It blocks an enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol, so the liver removes more cholesterol from the blood. Lowering cholesterol over years reduces the build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries, which is why it is taken long term.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day, at any time, with or without food, and is usually taken for years. Some people notice muscle aches, and the prescriber may check liver function. It is not suitable in pregnancy. The dose is set by the prescriber, and treatment should not be stopped without medical advice. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
