About telmisartan
What it treats
Telmisartan is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure and to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high risk. It relaxes the blood vessels so blood flows more easily.
Why it is chosen
It lasts a full 24 hours from a single dose, is well tolerated, and avoids the dry cough that can come with ACE inhibitors. It is also made in combination with amlodipine for patients who need two medicines.
How it is taken
It is taken once a day, with or without food. It must not be used in pregnancy, and it needs care in people with kidney problems or high potassium. Blood pressure and kidney function are checked during treatment. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
