About metoprolol
What it treats
Metoprolol is a beta-blocker used to treat high blood pressure, angina, certain irregular heart rhythms, and to protect the heart after a heart attack. The extended-release form is also used in heart failure.
Why it is used
Metoprolol acts mainly on the heart, is inexpensive, and has a large body of evidence behind it, so it is a standard heart medicine in hospitals and pharmacies. Extended-release versions allow once-a-day dosing.
How it is taken
The standard tablet is taken once or twice a day, and the dose is adjusted by the prescriber. It must not be stopped suddenly, and it is not suitable for people with asthma, a very slow heart rate or certain heart conduction problems. It can mask the signs of low blood sugar in people with diabetes. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
