About amlodipine combinations
What they treat
These fixed-dose tablets treat high blood pressure in adults whose blood pressure is not controlled by one medicine. Each pairs amlodipine, a calcium channel blocker, with a second medicine that works differently: an angiotensin receptor blocker (losartan or telmisartan) or a beta-blocker (atenolol).
Why one tablet
Most people with high blood pressure need two or more medicines. A single tablet means fewer pills, which helps patients take their treatment every day, and makes stocking simpler for pharmacies and programmes. Combinations are a large and growing share of blood pressure sales.
How they are taken
They are usually taken once a day, at a dose the prescriber adjusts. The cautions of both medicines apply: amlodipine can cause swollen ankles, the angiotensin receptor blockers must not be used in pregnancy, and atenolol must not be stopped suddenly. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
