About ferrous sulphate with folic acid
What it treats
Iron and folic acid prevent and treat anaemia, the shortage of red blood cells that leaves people tired and weak. Iron-deficiency anaemia is the most common nutritional problem in the world and is especially common in pregnant women and young children. Folic acid helps the body make red blood cells and, taken before and early in pregnancy, lowers the risk of birth defects of the spine and brain.
Why programmes buy it
The World Health Organization recommends a daily iron and folic acid supplement for pregnant women, and many national maternal health programmes distribute it free of charge. Because it is bought in very large quantities, programmes look for consistent quality, clear labelling and dependable supply.
How it is taken
It is usually taken once a day, and is better absorbed on an empty stomach or with a source of vitamin C, or with food if it upsets the stomach. It can darken the stools and cause constipation or nausea. An overdose of iron is dangerous to children, so tablets must be kept out of their reach. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
