About vitamin d3
What it is used for
Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) helps the body absorb calcium for strong bones and teeth. It is used to treat and prevent vitamin D deficiency, rickets in children and osteomalacia and osteoporosis in adults.
Why it is widely sold
Vitamin D deficiency is common, even in sunny countries, so doctors recommend supplements for babies, pregnant women, older people and many others. Weekly and monthly high-dose sachets are especially popular in India, the Middle East and Africa.
How it is taken
It is taken daily, weekly or monthly, depending on the strength, ideally with a meal that contains fat. Too much vitamin D can raise calcium levels and harm the kidneys, so doses are set by the prescriber and the label. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
