About multivitamin syrups
What they are used for
Multivitamin syrups and drops provide vitamins A, C, D and the B group, and sometimes zinc, iron or lysine, to prevent deficiency in growing children, during illness and recovery, and for people with a poor diet.
Why they sell
Parents buy them in large volumes, so syrups are one of the biggest private label categories in pharmacies, with room for flavour, bottle design and brand.
How they are taken
One or two measures are given once or twice a day, as the label gives for age. Vitamins A and D are fat-soluble and can build up if given in excess, so the dose on the pack should not be exceeded and other supplements should be counted. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
