About co-trimoxazole

What it treats

Co-trimoxazole combines two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, to treat urinary tract infections, bronchitis and some other chest infections, and certain types of diarrhoea. It is also taken every day by people living with HIV to prevent serious infections, including pneumocystis pneumonia. It is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.

Why programmes buy it

Co-trimoxazole is inexpensive, stable in the heat and effective, and daily preventive treatment for people with HIV is standard in national programmes. This means large and regular orders of tablets and a paediatric suspension.

How it is taken

It is taken once or twice a day, with the dose set by the infection and the patient's weight, and with plenty of fluids. It is a sulfonamide, so it is not suitable for people who are allergic to sulfa medicines, and it needs care in pregnancy and in people with kidney problems. The course should always be completed, and the label and the prescriber's instructions apply.
