About doxycycline
What it treats
Doxycycline is a tetracycline antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the chest and airways, skin, including acne, some sexually transmitted infections, and tropical infections such as cholera and rickettsial fevers. It is also used to prevent malaria in travellers and is on the World Health Organization Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why it is widely stocked
Doxycycline works against a very wide range of bacteria, is well absorbed, and needs only one or two doses a day. It is inexpensive and stable in the heat, so pharmacies, clinics and programmes buy it in large volumes.
How it is taken
It is taken once or twice a day, with a full glass of water and while sitting or standing, to protect the throat. Milk, antacids and iron can reduce how much is absorbed, and it can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. It is not suitable for pregnant women or for young children. The course should always be completed, and the label and the prescriber's instructions apply.
