About quinine
What it treats
Quinine is one of the oldest antimalarial medicines. The World Health Organization now recommends artesunate first for severe malaria, but quinine remains the standard alternative when artesunate is not available, and it is used in some situations such as the first months of pregnancy, usually together with another antibiotic. It is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.
Why hospitals still stock it
Quinine is inexpensive, works against the parasite that causes the most severe disease, and has decades of clinical experience behind it. Hospitals, district stores and tenders buy it as injection for emergency use, and as tablets to finish a course.
How it is given
The injection is given slowly by a healthcare professional, into a vein as a diluted infusion or into a muscle, because it can cause a dangerous fall in blood sugar and affect the heart if given too fast. Quinine can also cause ringing in the ears and nausea. Dosing depends on body weight and on the clinic's protocol. Patients should always follow the approved label and the treating clinician's instructions in their country.

Which forms of quinine do you supply?
Injection in ampoules of 300 mg and 600 mg, and quinine sulfate tablets. Other strengths and pack sizes can be made to order, and labelling is made to match the registration in your country.
Why do you supply quinine when artesunate is preferred?
Artesunate is the first choice for severe malaria, but many hospitals and district stores keep quinine as an alternative, and it has uses where an artemisinin is not suitable. We supply both, and can help you plan the range your market needs.
Can you supply tender packs of quinine injection?
Yes. Progene Pharma supplies ampoules in hospital and tender packs and the documents tenders usually ask for. Send us the requirements and we will confirm what we can provide.
Can you supply it under our own brand?
Yes. Progene Pharma manufactures it as a private label product, with the carton, blister foil or label and patient leaflet designed for your market and your regulator's requirements.
Which documents come with it?
Every batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Progene Pharma also provides the Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP), MSDS and the product dossier you need to register and import it.
Where is it manufactured?
Progene Pharma manufactures it in a WHO-GMP certified facility in India, also certified to EU-GMP and ISO standards. Tell us your destination country and we will confirm which certification applies to your order.
What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?
Both depend on the strength, pack size and documents your market needs. We confirm them with your quotation, and we work with large importers as well as smaller distributors.
