About artemether and lumefantrine

What it treats

Artemether and lumefantrine is used to treat uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite behind most malaria cases and deaths. It is an artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), the type of treatment the World Health Organization recommends for this kind of malaria, and it is on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines.

Why two medicines in one

Artemether works fast and brings the number of parasites down sharply in the first days of treatment. Lumefantrine stays in the body for longer and clears the parasites that remain. Using the two together makes treatment more reliable and helps slow the spread of drug resistance.

How it is taken

Treatment is a short course over three days, with the dose based on body weight, and it is best taken with food. The dry syrup is made up with water for young children who cannot swallow tablets. It is not a treatment for severe malaria, which starts with injectable artesunate. Patients should always follow the approved label in their country.
