About levofloxacin
What it treats
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, sinusitis, urinary tract and kidney infections and skin infections. It is also an important second-line medicine in programmes treating drug-resistant tuberculosis. It does not work on viruses.
Why it is used carefully
Because levofloxacin is powerful and bacteria can become resistant to it, health authorities advise keeping it for infections where other antibiotics are unsuitable. It is a prescription medicine in most countries, and programmes buy it for TB treatment as well as for general hospital use.
How it is taken
It is usually taken once a day, with the dose and the length of the course set by the infection. It can affect tendons, nerves and blood sugar, and it should not be taken together with antacids or iron within a few hours. It is not suitable for everyone, including most children and pregnant women. The course should always be completed, and the label and the prescriber's instructions apply.
