About aceclofenac
What it treats
Aceclofenac is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and swelling in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and back pain, and for toothache and other short-term pain.
Why it is widely sold
It works well at a twice-a-day dose and is often better tolerated by the stomach than some older NSAIDs, so it is one of the most prescribed painkillers in several regions. Combinations with paracetamol are popular in pharmacies.
How it is taken
The usual dose is one 100 mg tablet twice a day, after food. NSAIDs can irritate the stomach and, with long use, affect the kidneys and raise the risk of heart problems, so they are taken with food at the lowest dose for the shortest time. They are not suitable for people with stomach ulcers or severe kidney, liver or heart disease, and are avoided in late pregnancy. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
