About naproxen
What it treats
Naproxen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation in arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, tendon and muscle injuries, period pain and headaches.
Why it is chosen
Naproxen lasts longer than ibuprofen, so it is taken only twice a day, and it is considered to carry a lower risk to the heart than some other NSAIDs. It is a standard in hospitals and pharmacies.
How it is taken
It is taken twice a day with food or milk at the dose the condition needs. NSAIDs can irritate the stomach and, with long use, affect the kidneys and raise the risk of heart problems, so they are taken with food at the lowest dose for the shortest time. They are not suitable for people with stomach ulcers or severe kidney, liver or heart disease, and are avoided in late pregnancy. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.
