About diclofenac

What it treats

Diclofenac relieves pain and reduces inflammation in conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pain, sprains and strains, and pain after surgery or injury. It is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and the gel treats painful joints and muscles directly through the skin.

Why the tablet is coated

Diclofenac can irritate the stomach, so the tablets are coated to pass through the stomach and release in the intestine. Sustained-release tablets give steady relief over many hours and are taken once a day. The injection works quickly and is used when patients cannot take tablets.

How it is taken

The dose depends on the condition, and it should be taken at the lowest dose for the shortest time needed, with food. NSAIDs carry risks for the stomach, heart and kidneys, so diclofenac is not suitable for people with stomach ulcers or serious heart disease. Patients should always follow the approved leaflet and the advice of their doctor or pharmacist.
