About mefenamic acid

What it treats

Mefenamic acid is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used for mild to moderate pain, especially period pain, headaches, toothache and muscle pain, and, in some countries, to bring down fever in children.

Why it is widely sold

It is a trusted choice for period pain, one of the biggest painkiller categories in pharmacies, and it comes in capsule and tablet form. Paediatric suspensions are sold in some markets.

How it is taken

It is taken three times a day with food, for no longer than a week at a time. NSAIDs can irritate the stomach and, with long use, affect the kidneys and raise the risk of heart problems, so they are taken with food at the lowest dose for the shortest time. They are not suitable for people with stomach ulcers or severe kidney, liver or heart disease, and are avoided in late pregnancy. It can occasionally cause diarrhoea or rash, and should be stopped if these occur. Patients should always follow the approved label and the prescriber's instructions in their country.

Questions about mefenamic acid

Which strengths of mefenamic acid do you supply?

Capsules of 250 mg; tablets of 500 mg. Other strengths can be made to order, and pack sizes and labelling are made to match the registration in your country.

Is mefenamic acid a prescription medicine?

In most countries, yes. It is sold with a prescription and registered with the national medicines regulator. Rules differ by country, so check with your authority.

Why is it limited to a short course?

Mefenamic acid is intended for short-term use, up to about a week, because longer use raises the risk of stomach, kidney and other side effects. The label gives the approved duration.

Can you supply it under our own brand?

Yes. Progene Pharma manufactures it as a private label product, with the carton, blister foil or label and patient leaflet designed for your market and your regulator's requirements.

Which documents come with it?

Every batch ships with a Certificate of Analysis (COA). Progene Pharma also provides the Certificate of Pharmaceutical Product (COPP), MSDS and the product dossier you need to register and import it.

Where is it manufactured?

Progene Pharma manufactures it in a WHO-GMP certified facility in India, also certified to EU-GMP and ISO standards. Tell us your destination country and we will confirm which certification applies to your order.

What is the minimum order quantity and lead time?

Both depend on the strength, pack size and documents your market needs. We confirm them with your quotation, and we work with large importers as well as smaller distributors.
